I have 14 years of experience navigating special education in Seattle Public Schools. At age 3, my son moved out of early intervention services and to Green Lake Elementary for developmental pre-K services. Now as a young adult, he’s receiving transition services through the district’s BRIDGES program. Despite low expectations and segregation in self-contained classrooms, my son has done okay in special education. When COVID closed schools and I joined the PTSA board, I learned far more about the system I thought I knew well. Getting a behind-the-scenes look at questionable district actions, I realized how big the problems are for students with disabilities and their families.
