Our goal should always be to eliminate both the need for and the use of restraint and isolation practices in our schools.

Whole School, Whole District: A Phased Implementation

Start small, then build capacity, work with a CPS-certified trainer or DIY with a “Lost at School” Book Study.

Phase 1: 

Core Group. 8-10 ppl in building do training, practice. Use ALSUP and Plan B w/ real kids. Give feedback on unsolved problems.

Phase 2: 

Spread It (Modeling). Modeling by Core Group Members w/ new members joining as observers.

Phase 3:

Spread It (Coaching). Core Group coaches new folks to do ALSUP, Plan B.

Dear , 

I’m writing to you today to ask you to support training for all staff in Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS), an evidence-based model developed by Dr. Ross Greene from Lives in the Balancethat gives educators practical tools to meet students’ academic and behavioral needs.

CPS is different from traditional behavior management (e.g. rewards and consequences/punitive discipline) in that it focuses on the unsolved problems (adult expectations and kids’ lagging skills) that lead to concerning behaviors, rather than on simply managing or eliminating behaviors. It centers students as partners in problem solving, gives voice to their lived experience, and gives educators the information they need to support struggling learners. It’s a paradigm shift in how we engage with students, and it’s what our schools need right now.

This matters to me personally because too many kids continue to struggle in school because educators don’t yet understand what kids who engage in concerning behavior are dealing with, and what, exactly, their behavior is communicating. CPS takes away much of the guesswork that educators and professionals do by involving students directly, and proactively, one problem at a time. 

Dr. Greene gave a presentation to Seattle and Washington state in November 2022. Over 700 people (parents, educators, school district leaders, state legislators and advocacy organizations) attended, and many more have watched the presentation since. The Seattle Special Education PTSA is in talks with Seattle Public Schools about Dr. Greene’s offer to bring these trainings to schools district-wide, at little to no cost to the district.
